We are so happy that we can finally share our years of research and our personal experiences from pre-conception through to raising our children. In 2006, Dave and I were ready to start our family and decided to combine our knowledge to figure out how to have the healthiest, happiest and brightest baby we could. At the same time we wanted to reduce the risk of autism, allergies, asthma and other common developmental issues as much as possible.  With my background as a medical doctor and Dave’s as an expert in nutrition and supplements, we had some amazing results, and today we’re the proud parents of two healthy, happy kids.  This book is our way of sharing what we learned, what works with parents-to-be, and parents everywhere!

Whether you’re planning for pregnancy or are already pregnant, this essential prenatal guide draws on the latest genetic research to give you a complete program of specific nutrition and environmental lifestyle changes that can help you have a better baby. The book is based on the emerging science of epigenetics and shows how the environment interacts with your genes, affecting which genes are expressed or “turned on”. It shows you the important steps you can take to improve preconception nutrition and reduce toxins in your home and body to consciously help your child express the right genes. To be healthy, smart, and strong.

Key topics The Better Baby Book covers:

  • Leverages the latest epigenetics research to help you have a healthier, smarter, and happier baby with a lower risk of allergies, asthma, and developmental issues
  • Shares a specific prescriptive program based on four principles: eating the right foods; taking the right supplements; detoxifying before, during, and after pregnancy; and minimizing stress
  • Shows how a woman’s health and her environment during pregnancy may have a much bigger impact on her child than was previously thought

Help us share what we’ve learned by pre-ordering The Better Baby Book, and/or “liking” it on Amazon.  If you order an e-copy on Kindle please share your review on Amazon to help show your support.

Spread the word and encourage healthier families by letting your friends on Twitter and Facebook know that if you want the healthiest, brightest baby  it all starts with the proper prenatal preparations.

I ordered and read the Kindle version of this book. I was hoping to do more digging into the 1300 references. But I can’t find a reference section in the book, and there aren’t footnotes or endnotes. Where can I find a list of references?

Great question! They will be uploaded to the website shortly (end of January at the latest) and a link will be provided as an additional response to your question.

Awesome. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll check back in January.

    two questions:

    1) the diet guidelines [in the form of that two-tone graphic] in the book are identical to Dave’s guidelines. I would have thought the guidelines for a pregnant woman would be different?

    2) The book mentions recipes on the website. Where are these?

    Hi everyone,

I am reading the book now and will continue to put my questions up here.

    My primary outstanding questions are
    1) The book mentions that there are food recipes on the website. Where are these?
    2) The book states that a list grass-fed butter brands are on the website. I do not see these under the butter tag. Where are these?

    Hi,

I have read the book yesterday and it was very informative and inexpensive for the information given, thank you!

I have one question, you mentioned under birth control to use non-toxic condoms. Can you give examples of some and what to look out for? My husband and I use Skyn polyisoprene condoms but they are lubricated with an unknown lubricant and we can’t find non-lubricated ones. Is the lubricant toxic? We have tried other ones like Naturalamb which I am assuming is non-toxic but we found them to tear easily and being extremely expensive. Is polyisoprene OK to use? We just want an effective, comfortable, and safe birth control method and from our research this is the best bet.

    Thanks!

    • Kristi

Or you could one day come out with a line of upgraded condoms, haha! I’m sure people would buy!

      • Lana Asprey

Absolutely haha! we have looked at so many things, but not that one, as far as I can remember. Like the idea though. Perhaps the next big thing!

      Hi Kristi!
Glad you like the book and found it helpful. Natural latex condoms are free from parabens, phthalates etc. Hm, good questions about the lubricant. Probably has something that’s likely to be chemical, but if you can’t find unlubricated ones, then go with the ones you are using. Polyisoprene is just a version of natural latex that’s less likely to cause allergies for people who are latex sensitive. If you use a personal lubricant, make sure it’s compatible with latex condoms, as mineral oils etc can break down latex and make it less than 100% contraceptive.

Hi – thanks for putting together a very thought-provoking and helpful resource. As Cubitplanning noted, looking forward to seeing the references.

A couple of questions: in the book you mention that Lana took 7-9 multivitamins per day during her pregnancies, and mention that recommendations for good brands will be on the website. However, following the link provided, under the “supplements” section of the website, it says “Throw Away Your Multivitamins.” Can you clarify your stance?

Similarly, the book says it is problematic to get Vitamin A from cod liver oil; however, the website lists Cod Liver Oil as the recommended source for Vitamin A.

    • Lana Asprey

Hi IS, this is Lana. Thanks for your questions. Well, yes, as you say, that’s a bit confusing, isn’t is? It’s what happens when you write a book, have a website, and don’t go into all the details. Here’s what we mean: if your are taking just one multivitamin pill every day, and think you are getting what you need as a pregnant woman, then you really do need to think again. The whole idea of “one a day” pill that will provide all you need is so convenient, and so misinformed. What I took was the Garden of Life, Living Multi, which is an excellent basic multivitamin. I took 3 in the morning, 3 at lunch at 2 at dinner. ON TOP OF THAT, I took extra C, E, D, Calcium, Mg, Iodine, resveratrol, CoQ10, follinic acid, a B-complex, fish oil and progesterone cream for the first three months. I might have forgotten something, But you get the picture.

The “problematic” part about cod liver oil is that it IS a good source, but since it’s pretty high in A, you must also pay careful attention to how much vitamin A is in your other vitamins (including your multivitamin if you are taking one), so that you DON’T overdose the A. that’s all. Hope this helps.
